  • Tyre woes, continued 🚲

On a ride on Saturday I damaged the rear tyre on my gravel bike. Looks like I was riding with too little pressure for the terrain.

At first I thought it was only a puncture and tried to repair that. It sealed easily enough but with that fixed, it quickly became clear that the rim tape was damaged as well and air was leaking out of a spoke hole. Great, just great.

So, off with the tyre, off with the old rim tape. I cleaned everything nicely and put on new rim tape, put the tyre back on, and some fresh Stan’s No Tubes Race Sealant in, pumped up the tyre and the second I hit 30 PSI, I had sealant spraying out of the side.

Turns Out™ that I did more damage to the tyre than I saw during the first two rounds of inspections. I created a 3 mm long slice in the tyre just above the hook of the rim (just to the right of the valve).

That’s a tricky spot and not even the typically dependable Stan’s sealant was able to close that one since there’s always movement in this area. Luckily the tyre seems to still be usable.

So over the next few days, I’ll have to clean all the sealant out, clean the inside of the mantle and reassemble everything with tubes. Not a big fan of it, because even running the very good Tubolito tubes will require me to ride with higher pressures compared to riding tubeless.

    Ah well.

    Side note:

This episode once again showed me how the DT Swiss CR1600 rims are close to bomb-proof. I have two pairs and over the years I’ve thrown serious abuse at them. Sure, they have a couple of scratches but both pairs still run absolutely true.

  • Ah, the joys of tubeless tyre maintenance. Where what you thought was a simple puncture obtained on a particularly rough bit of trail, requiring only some fresh sealant, instead reveals a punctured rim tape and the need to remove the old and carefully install new tape. 🚲

  • Small setback for the daily beater 🚲 project: I needed a new stem and ordered a Ritchey Classic 220 stem because it was the only thing available in a polished aluminium look. Turns out it’s painted and has a milky enamel sheen to it. I‘ll have to sand and polish it off.

  • New (used) handlebars with a 68 cm width for the daily beater bike project arrived. The current ones are 53 cm wide on a 13.5 cm stem. That’s way too narrow and very stretched out. New 7 cm stem to arrive on Saturday probably. 🚲

  • Took possession of a roughly 25 years old MTB last week, to become my daily beater. Beautiful old piece of kit. What amuses me to no end, though, is how close the geometry resembles my modern gravel bike. Or rather the other way around. 🚲

  • Gah!
Setting up a bike to fit comfortably is so hard. Came away from a longer virtual ride with knee pain and two overly strained quadriceps. A bunch of research later I found out that my saddle was too low and that the “heel method” I always used doesn’t work for me. 🚲

  • I’m preparing one of my bikes to be picked up by its new owner and I have to replace the bottom bracket. Once again I’m experiencing how much better and more precisely machined the basic ROTOR PressFit BB is, compared to even the mid-range SRAM and Shimano BBs. 🚲

  • 🚲 Micro review of the SKS Speedrocker gravel bike clip-on mudguards:

    • Inexpensive
    • Not particularly pretty
    • Easy and quick to put on after initial setup
    • Very decent protection, side splash with 38 mm tyres is minimal
    • Quiet and stay in place securely even on bumpy roads
